Safeguarding NATO Skies

Aggiornamento: 22 feb 2024

Since the dawn of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949, its member states have worked together to protect the shared airspace of the Baltic Sea. On May 12, 2023, the Allies continued to demonstrate their commitment to this effort by participating in a joint exercise to guard the skies of the Baltic Sea.

The exercise, codenamed “Baltic Guardian”, was conducted by NATO’s Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission. The mission saw the joint participation of air forces from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

The exercise was designed to hone the Allies’ ability to detect, identify, and respond to any potential air threats. During the exercise, aircraft from the participating nations flew close to the Baltic Sea and monitored the airspace, while ground-based personnel coordinated their activities.

The Baltic Guardian exercise is part of a larger effort by NATO to safeguard the airspace of the Baltic Sea. The Allies have established a BAP mission in the region since 2004. The mission is designed to enhance the security of the airspace over the Baltic Sea by providing 24/7 surveillance of the region.

The exercise also serves as a reminder of the importance of collective defense in protecting the airspace of the Baltic Sea. Despite the fact that the region was once divided by the Iron Curtain, the Allies have since come together to ensure that the airspace of the Baltic Sea remains a safe and secure environment.

The exercise also highlights the importance of continued cooperation between the Allies in the region. By working together, the Allies have been able to ensure the safety of the airspace of the Baltic Sea. It is through this cooperation that the Allies have been able to effectively safeguard the airspace of the Baltic Sea for decades.

The Allies’ commitment to safeguarding the airspace of the Baltic Sea is a testament to the strength of the Alliance and its ability to protect its members and ensure regional stability. The Baltic Guardian exercise serves as a reminder of the importance of collective defense and its ability to ensure the safety of the region.
