Growing up in Canada, Halloween always felt like such a familiar tradition, but it’s interesting to realize its roots stretch back to around 400 BC.
The festival actually started as a Celtic celebration marking the end of summer and the beginning of a new year. Back then, it was believed that the souls of the dead could visit the living on this special day.
Families would even leave a place at the table for their departed loved ones. To guide these spirits to their homes, they began carving faces into turnips and potatoes, placing lights inside to welcome them.
When Irish immigrants brought this tradition to North America in the 1800s, it eventually evolved into the Halloween we know today, with its iconic carved pumpkins and spooky decorations.
Halloween’s Journey to Canada
According to Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night by Nicholas Rogers, Halloween began to take hold in Canada as Irish immigrants settled in urban areas. By the late 1800s, people were already dressing up in costumes, and Halloween masks were being sold in places like Kingston, Ontario, not far from where I grew up!
Stores quickly jumped on the bandwagon, offering seasonal treats like chocolates and gumdrops. Pumpkins, easier to carve than the traditional turnips, became a central part of the celebrations, and we all know how important they are today.
In fact, the phrase "trick or treat" reportedly first appeared in a Canadian newspaper in 1927, when pranksters went door to door demanding either a trick or a treat.
Modern Halloween in Canada
Today, Halloween in Canada is about as fun and festive as it gets, with costumes, decorations, and trick-or-treating still at the heart of the event.
Of course, as much as I loved pumpkin carving as a kid, it’s not always that simple in Canada—like the time Banff, Alberta had to warn residents to bring in their pumpkins because a grizzly bear was making rounds in search of food!
While trick-or-treating is still about collecting candy, it’s become less mischievous over the years. From 1947 to 2006, UNICEF’s Orange Box campaign raised millions for charity as kids collected spare change alongside their candy haul.
In Ontario, some households even hand out special treats like discounted swimming or skating passes instead of candy—a creative twist on the tradition.
For many Canadian families, Halloween is something we all look forward to, and schools often join the fun by inviting kids to dress up in costumes.
It’s fascinating to think how a Celtic festival from 2,500 years ago has traveled across time and space, becoming a beloved night for families in Canada.
We’ve really made Halloween our own, blending the ancient with the modern in a way that feels uniquely Canadian.
